Welcome to
United Arts club

I’m delighted to virtually welcome you to the United Arts Club and hope that a look around this website will give you a sense of the club’s history and its mission to be a centre for Ireland's artistic community, a place to gather, enjoy and exchange.

The UAC has moved through many phases since it was founded in the early part of the last century by some of the most interesting artists of the period. I first encountered it in the 1980s as someone just beginning to dip my toe in creative waters and found it had a slow bohemian pulse which was very intoxicating to me at the time.

Recently, there's been a new energy about the place and believe there is very bright future for the club as it continues its mission to serve the arts in Ireland through the actors, writers, painters, sculptors, filmmakers, architects, musicians and dancers, who, along with their appreciators, make up its community.

I wrote poems not cheques last Christmas.

Writing poems as a Christmas present cost-cutter: ingenious or ungenerous?

Our Irish artistic exports are world-beating, but they are the tip of an iceberg melting from the bottom.

As glamorous as the Irish arts look on the red carpet, the true health of the arts in Ireland is below the surface.

Lenny Abrahamson on the importance of uncertainty, empathising with drug addicts & knowing his best work is ahead of him.

Lenny Abrahamson is currently writing a script. I ask him how he copes with the incessant sound of poorly-played rock songs from the band busking outside.

The RHA Annual Exhibition: the annals of Irish visual art.

While the exhibition wonderfully reflects contemporary Ireland, it falls short of capturing the dynamism and dilemmas of modern Ireland.

James Pretluv - Seventy Eight Thank Yous
James Pretluv - Seventy Eight Thank Yous
In his acclaimed one man show, Seventy-Eight Thank Yous, writer and performer James Pretlove shares tales of the extraordinary death and ordinary life of his mother, Val Pretlove, who died by suicide in 2018 at the age of 78. Alongside the deep grief James felt, his mind began to fill with thank yous for his mum. As it did so, he laughed, cried—even more than he was already—and realised the many gifts there were not only in her life, but in her death too.

The Four of Clubs
The Four of Clubs
Step into a whirlwind tour through time with The Four of Clubs, a captivating celebration of four legendary female impresarios who defied convention and lit up the nightlife scenes of their eras. From the glittering ballrooms of 18th century Soho, where Venetian opera diva Teresa Cornelys ruled London's first "nightclub" at Carlisle House... To the underground avant-garde glamour of Frieda Strindberg’s Cave of the Golden Calf in 1912 Mayfair, frequented by artists, rebels, and rockstars of their time... Then to the seductive world of the Marchesa Luisa Casati, the eccentric Italian heiress who turned herself into living art and scandalized Europe... And finally, to roaring 1920s Club 43 in Soho, run by the indomitable Irish queen of speakeasies, Kate Meyrick — a woman who partied through prohibition and prison alike. A rich blend of storytelling, theatre, and time-traveling spectacle awaits. This is not just a show — it’s a celebration of the bold, the wild, and the women who made history after dark. Doors for this event are at 6:30pm and tickets are €15, please contact the office at office@unitedartsclubdublin.com to purchase your tickets.
